Kenny Ryan is first and foremost a screenwriter. Ryan worked on a number of student films before joining New Renaissance Pictures. Things have taken off for the young writer in the last year: Punky, a film about a door-to-door shoe salesman, garnered awards for Best Narrative Feature at the 2006 National Broadcast Educators Conference and was an official selection for the 2005 Iron Sharpens Iron film festival. At the 2006 Biola Film Festival, the film was nominated for Best Picture, Best Comedy and Ryan won the award for Best Screenplay. The same year, Ryan received the academic award of Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Screenwriting from Biola University.
Ryan is currently working on a feature film adaptation of the Lonnie Frisbee documentary. Entitled The Life and Death of a Hippie Preacher, the film is slated for an independent production next winter. The picture tells the story of Lonnie Frisbee—the original Jesus Freak, saved while tripping out on LSD, who would go on to start two major church movements before being cast out of established religion for his homosexuality. It's a fascinatingly tragic story of the struggle between our spirit and our flesh and the wonderful grace of God. Ryan is also developing an original thriller for the Lifetime Network.
In late 2006, Ryan directed a new short film for New Renaissance Pictures, Nothing to Lose, which will premiere in early 2007.
