Music wasn't a huge part of Dave Martina's life until he hit high school, when he decided to start a jazz band. With no prior experience in jazz, he took on the job of putting together a full-size big band that gigged frequently. This was the first of many experiences that led him to the decision: what did he want to do when he grew up?
His senior year of high school, Dave was exposed more fully to the possibility of writing for films: he became closely attentive to the use of music in any movie he was watching, and decided to try it out. He wrote for his first film in his freshman year of college, and completely fell in love with it—this is what he wanted to do. The influence of music by itself is indisputably strong, but when coupled with the magnificent visual storytelling power of film it can be unstoppable.
In his second year of college, Dave scored a dozen different projects, dipping into as many different genres as possible. In the spring of 2007, he founded the Film Music Society and Society for Student Film Composers at Biola University in an effort to grow the music program's resources in the area of commercial and film music and to increase and facilitate collaboration with the film department.
Dave is dedicated to learning both the technical and business skills that are necessary to compete in the Hollywood industry, and has a plan in place to make Biola University's music department a strong competitor for commercial music students in the greater Los Angeles area. Current thought projects include exploring the proper synthesis of art and entertainment together with business and community into a model that will effectively produce strong composers who are also complete men and women. He is also contemplating starting his own commercial music agency to help other composers with the business side of film scoring.
When Dave isn't thinking about film, he enjoys talking light philosophy, laughing, and general “chilling.” He is in love with a beautiful girl named Paige who has blue eyes and mad skills en Espanol. He also runs a jazz combo, The Kicks, which is available for events of any size.
